New Moon in Taurus
On the evening of May 7, we are under a sky in which the Sun, Moon, Venus, Jupiter and Uranus are all in the sign of Taurus. As the Sun is our conscious selves, the Moon our deepest needs, Venus our desires, Jupiter an offering of vast abundance and Uranus the usher of what is next and new, this is the perfect day to manifest something extraordinary within the earthly realm.
Taurus is an earth sign (each sign is either fire, earth, air or water), and out of the three earth signs in the zodiac — Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn — it is the sign most associated with sensuality. While there is indeed a connotation of eroticism when we talk about the sensuous, the Latin root of the word simply means, “endowed with feeling.”
As embodied beings, we first feel the world through our experiences of touch, taste, sound, smell and sight. It is through our senses that we first learn to cognize the world. Each of these senses conjures up something within us whether that be joy, fear, pleasure, pain and so on. Only later when our minds become our main source of information do we forget that it is through these five experiences that we first create our understanding of the world around us and what it means to us and about us. We learn through our sight, touch and hearing that we are larger than some things and much smaller than others; through taste we learn what will nourish us and what will cause us harm; through smell we are able to make our way to our mother’s breast to name only a few lessons of which there are many other. When the mind becomes overly dominant, we are constantly commenting on the experience of being embodied rather than living it.
As Mark Nepo writes in The Book of Awakening, “Rather than opening us deeper into the mystery of living, the overtrained intellect becomes a buffer from experience.”
In this same passage, Nepo also reminds us to “live in our hands,” meaning that we must use our bodies and our bodily experiences to create what it is we want to be a part of and see. Putting our thoughts and dreams through our fingertips or voice allows us to truly be with God to co-create something holy rather than to simply name something as holy.
Everything we’ve ever read, heard, touched, tasted or seen is a prayer made into reality through the physical effort of a physical being. Each of these things is a declaration that effort driven by love has value.
For this New Moon in Taurus, meditate on the love that you want to bring into material form, and name the first action needed for that creation.
